Germany’s Merz Urges Europe to Step Up Diplomacy on Iran Conflict
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Merz said he had grown increasingly doubtful about the trajectory of the conflict and the assumptions made at its outset.
“Regarding Iran, yes, I've become disillusioned,” Merz told a press conference in Berlin when asked about his earlier remarks that the US lacks an “exit strategy” and that Americans were “humiliated” by Tehran.
He added that early expectations from Washington and Tel Aviv that the conflict would be resolved quickly had proven unrealistic.
“The US and Israel assumed, right from the start, that this problem would be resolved within a few days, and we now have to acknowledge that it isn't,” the chancellor said. “That's why we, from the European side, want to contribute diplomatically to finding a solution.”
According to reports, Merz said Germany has restarted direct communication channels with Iran and is also engaging with regional partners in an effort to support broader diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalation.
He emphasized that European governments are coordinating with the United States, but also intend to pursue their own diplomatic proposals.
“We are coordinating closely with the US side on this, but we also make it clear that we have our own European ideas on how to reach a resolution to the conflict,” Merz said.
He concluded by expressing cautious hope, while acknowledging uncertainty about the outcome.
“I hope we succeed, but I am not certain,” he said.
